Guarana seed extract is usually consumed with hot water preferably without sugar or little sugar.
In 2007 A human pilot study assessed the acute behavioral effects of four doses (37.5 mg, 75 mg, 150 mg and 300 mg) of extract of guarana. Memory alertness and mood were increased by the two lower doses, which confirms the earlier findings of cognitive improvements following 75 mg guarana. These studies have not been evaluated by a government agency of the United States, so that the United States there are no medical or regulatory approval for the use of guarana in improving cognition .
Other laboratory studies have shown antioxidant effects and anti-bacterial, and reduction of fat cells (in combination with conjugated linoleic acid) from chronic intake of guarana.
Guarana extract has positive effect on the risk of heart attack or ischemic stroke.
